Donated Dresser

I am taking the day off from the LR ceiling reno because my arms can't take sanding two days in a row. I am such a slouch! And my husband is out of town so I am not tooooo motivated to do much without him today.

But I thought I'd share a quick dresser re-do and one that was done for the best of reasons. So someone less fortunate could benefit from it.

I was sitting in church two Sundays ago and it was Celebration of Life month. One of my friends who is the head of an organization called Young Lives was speaking. Young Lives exists to share the gospel and provide support to teenage moms. Many of these girls do not have family support but they choose to have their babies and it is often a very hard road. Well, Judy was telling us about a young girl who was ouch surfing. I had never heard the term before. It means they bunk on someones couch because they have no place to live. This girl also has an 8 month old as well! My heart ached for this girl and her daughter.

Judy then shared how Young Lives was able to find her an apartment but when they went to visit her, she was sleeping on an air mattress. Young Lives then provided her with a bed and linens.

I was so upset that this happens in our day and age.
I had a perfectly good dresser waiting in my basement for me to paint and sell but for some reason I had been hesitating about getting it done. Now I knew.

I asked Judy if the girl had a dresser. She said no but her favorite color is blue.
I never painted so fast in my life!
I stripped the top and started painting the drawers.
Once the top was polyed, I got to work straight away on the frame and hardware.
The poly was barley dry on the paint when I called Judy to say "she's ready!"

I am sad to say I did not have time to take good after pics because Judy and her husband whisked it away like Cinderella.

But here she is in my humble basement. I figured a distressed finish was a good idea because with a little one running around soon, it was going to get banged up so might as well make it look like it already was.

Blessings Michelle.

Please support Young Lives if you feel led. These girls need women to speak into their lives and hearts.

Who knows how God may use YOU to help someone in need.....

Teacup Rose Drop Cloth Flower Tutorial

Okay so are you ready for the next flower in this little posy? Again, get ready for a super easy but beautiful flower made of drop cloth in under 10 minutes.
Please see the whole doorknob posy put together here and

and the rolled fringe rose here to see the first steps needed to complete this project.

What you need:
Drop cloth scraps washed and dried and maybe dyed
Hot glue and glue gun
silver glitter glue

Start by cutting a circle about 6-7" in diameter. Then starting on the outside, cut a spiral into the middle.  If you want greater uniformity, draw your spiral lines on the circle then cut. Or you can eyeball it like me and try and keep the spiral the same width all the way around.

Grab your hot glue gun and roll the middle into a cone about a half turn and glue in place.

Cut a piece of scrap drop cloth in a circle about 1.5" in diameter and put a dab of glue in the middle

Glue your spiral circle cone to the dot. Hold upright until dry. Now all you are going to do is ad some glue to the scrap circle and then keeping your spiral on its edge, glue the edge to the scrap. As with the fringe rolled rose, the tighter you roll it the smaller the rose and the looser, the bigger the rose.  I kept my gluing medium tight so it made the rose about 2.5" wide.

When you get to the end, just hot glue the end in place well.

Here it is un-embellished. At this point you can leave it plain or dress it up with some silver glitter glue. I have tried crystal glitter glue and gold glue and I think the silver complements the grey and the pink the best. But these are your flowers so use what you want!

Here they are embellished. I just ran the tip of my glitter glue tube around the edges and put three dots in the middle.

Big glitter glue dot hint: To prevent your dots from being gloppy, release all the pressure on the tube before you lift it out of the glue dot. This way your glue dot does not become a glue string and drip over where you do not want it. It's a lot like an icing bag, if you have ever done that. If not then I've lost you obviously.

Here is a pretty close up

Check back in a few days and see how we make the two little flowers on the left. So is any body trying these? Please let me know and also let me know if you have ever done any other material flowers yourself. I'd love to know!

Living Room Reno-Demo

Thought I'd share with you the progress we have made on the LR since Friday.
Any ideas yet about sofa/chair choices? You can go here to see the before photos.

Friday: I took down the wall paper, bad chair rail used as crown moulding, ceiling fan, and the blasted ceiling tile. Almost forgot to turn off the electric when I tackled the fan so this might be an entirely different kind of post if that thought hadn't kicked in in time....

We have no overhead lighting so I wanted to add 4 pot lights in the corners to brighten things up. Thank goodness we know an awesome electrician, my husband's high school friend, who does happen to remember to turn the electricity of when working with live wires.....

Saturday: Mike and my hubs re-wired the ceiling fan junction box and added four new holes to my ceiling. Just kidding they did add new holes but these will be home to my 4 beautiful reflecting recessed lighting buddies.

I love Mike!!!!

Sunday: While I went to church, the drywall went up like a fairy god mother waved her wand! Maybe fairy godfathers. My husband, Mike, and now we added his other high school friend Chris got the drywall up and the pot light housings in in no time flat and we got the first coat of mud on.

On the agenda for tomorrow: sand the walls and ceiling and second coat. Decide on a wall color.
decide if I want to do anything else to the ceiling. My shoulders can help me decide after sanding.
