Happened upon this dresser this summer and just got around to getting it redone. It is a Berkey & Gay dresser that was in awesome condition. A few veneer issues but the inside of the drawers were in pristine condition which is unusual. Most times I have to scrape copious amounts of bad contact paper!
Berkey & Gay was a furniture company that originated in Michigan and they made beautiful pieces. A quick google search shows that they have also retained thier value due to the master craftsmen that made them.
I needed to fix a runner on one of the drawers and three of the six backplates were missing but I will show you a simple solution to replace those and fix the runner the next few days.
Love this feature but it was not in good shape so I had to paint over it. It took me a long time to re-do the dresser because I was stuck on color choice. I finally got some inspiration from Miss Mustard Seed and her Boxwood colored Milk Paint. I didn't buy the milkpaint but I found a color in the BEHR line that was close and I added my plaster of paris to make it into chalkpaint and went to town.
So happy with it. Stuck again on the color of the hardware. I finally settled on black. I was going to highlight some of the details in turquoise but when I did a small spot, I just didn't think it looked right so I added some stain to those areas instead and finally wax on and to the booth she went.
Thanks Berkey & Gay for making such fine furniture that lasts
Always being renewed,
This is absolutely stunning, Kim! It looks like a piece from a high end store. :)

Kim, glad I stumbled onto your blog through Elizabeth & Co. I'm always grateful to be led to other Christians. Love this dresser ! GREAT color ! Glad you didn't go with the turquoise for this piece. I've subscribed to receive your blog with email because I really need to know how to fix those runners. I have issues with a few on old dressers in my own collection. Looking forward to seeing what you do next !

ReplyDeleteHi! I came over from Miss Mustard Seed and I'm glad I did. Beautiful job! LOVE the hardware. Is it new or did it come with the dresser? If it's new, would you be so kind as to tell us what brand, where you got it, etc.? Thanks so much!!
ReplyDeleteMary
Hi Mary- The hardware actually came with the dresser but was missing several of the backplates. YOu can go to this post to see how I remedied that situation so I could still use the original hardware.
