Rocking Chair Hack

Welcome back to another version of the Crazy Hacker! Yes, I have been known to hack apart communion tables for parts and now I have used my hacking skills to turn parts of an old rocking chair into two useful home decor projects. I started to take the chair apart to reupholster but when I got it down to its bones, it was really not worth repairing.

So I did what any good repurposer does and looked for what could be saved!  I saw potential in the back and a brace as seen below:

I primed with grey primer since the wood is red and I wasn't sure what color I would be using so in case I decided to go light, I did not want red bleed through to the final product.  I found an awesome fabric remnant and decided to go blue!

I covered a piece of Luan with the fabric to create a pin board and then added a leftover wood piece from a mantel to make a shelf. Because the back angled out from the wall we added pegs to the back to make the shelf sit level. This got snapped up pretty quickly!

The brace got turned into a cute little towel rack just by adding a dowel.

So before throwing out a broken chair, check under its hood for parts! You just might be surprised at how you can save something that might have sentimental value to you and you'll do us all a favor and keep it out of the dump.

He has a purpose for our brokenness as well. It is for His glory to be shown when we come through trials and suffering and even better….it is for our renewal and to create our dependence on Him. You can stand up to anything if you bow your will to Him.

Isaiah 14:24
"The LORD Almighty has sworn, Surely as I have planned so it will be and as I have purposed, so it will stand"

Hello again!

Well, it has been a little over a year since I have posted anything here. I opened my shop December of 2014 and it has been a whirlwind year plus! I learned a lot and am still learning about business, marketing, customer service, trying to remain creative and family oriented! My goal with the shop is for it to not take over my life as I work 3 days a week as an audiologist but also that my family stays a priority. It is has been very rewarding and very stressful at times but so far I still love it!

We also put in a new patio and turned our dining room into a kitchen last summer so there's that too! I will get to that in a bit bit for now I think I am going to ease back into blogging with posts on Mondays and Fridays right now. I am going to try and post just before and afters right now as it will be very tough to blog and do tutorials (my tutes tend to be very involved so you can do things exactly like I did but it also means a very long post!)  so please feel free to ask questions in the comments section if you have a burning desire to know how I did things.

So to see how fabric can change a look from tired to terrific….Feast your eyes on this set of nesting tables and a little MCM sewing chair.

sad, sad indeed

sprayed with chalk paint using my Finish Max PRO paint sprayer by Home Right.

Fun fabric brightens these tables right up. I put plexi-glass on the tops of each so not only are the pratical and keep the fabric clean, but you can change the fabric!

cute but dirty and old

sassy and new. This fabric is a sheet! Just reinforce with fusible backing and it becomes much more durable.

I hope your day is transformed through the renewing of your mind and spirit!

My New favorite RED

I know it has been a while, I seem to be saying that more and more lately. Having a shop has definitely taken it's toll in the time department. I think I have things a bit more settled and in a little more of a routine so I can get back to showing some fun projects. One such projects is this bed! I had picked it up during a thrift shopping spree about a year ago for $50!

The finials caught my eye from across the store and I ran to get it before anyone else could. They didn't even have the footboard out yet that is how fast I snatched it up!

But it had these little birds on it that I didn't love and the bed was in fantastic shape so it came home with me and then sat in my basement. Once I got the shop, I figured I would try to sell it as is and it sold the first day! The gentleman who purchased it, Patrick, did not like the birds either! He wanted me to paint the bed somehow so the birds were covered but keep some of the wood and He wanted it red.
I love a person who is not afraid of color!

Those little finials reminded me of pagodas so I went searching for a great Chinese red.

I love this red! It is called Licorice Stick by Behr. It is a gorgeous deep but vibrant red and because I used the Marquee line of paints it went on so smooth and even it only took me two coats. I know Marquee says one coat coverage but I prefer two for durability.

It made the wood pop right out of its grain! And on top of it, the top piece with the birds really looks like a pagoda or the Emperor's City which I hadn't really noticed before because all of the wood was running together. This is one of those times when I think paint enhanced the lines of the piece but because we didn't paint the whole thing, the wood still was able to shine.

I picked strategic places to paint so the whole bed and design looked cohesive.

Patrick asked me to add some gold to the bed in places as well so I covered the red lightly with a coat of gold glaze and then added just the gold to some other details to further highlight the beds cool features

You can see the gold on the little triangle below the finial.

I loved how the bed turned out and Patrick sent me some photos of it all set up in his guest bedroom!

Patrick liked the bed so much he asked me to make him some slipcovers for his living room chairs AND his dining room chairs.

Stop back to see the chair transformation and to see some new things added to the shop!
